Water play is perhaps my most favorite sensory activity for kids of all ages, there is something so exciting and relaxing about playing with water. Babies don’t need a lot of water, but it can be a good idea to keep an extra supply nearby in case it spills. Pour the water into a small, shallow bowl so they can easily reach any accessories.

Keep accessories simple. I like to add two or three small, easy-to-hold containers, a spoon or small ladle, and a few smooth, flat river rocks. Make sure you choose larger stones that don’t pose a choking hazard. If you don’t have the right stones, replace them with some plastic blocks or shapes.

Your baby will probably get a little wet, so be sure to dress him in play clothes that won’t bother you too much if he gets dirty. If it’s very hot and you have a shady spot, just a diaper will do. You can also keep a towel nearby to dry off when you’re done. In cooler weather, have your child sit somewhere in a shelter, place them on a beach towel if you are indoors, or on bricks or decking, and use warm water instead of cold water.
