The fourteenth season aired in 2020 but in two parts as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the UK that same year. The first half focused on audition episodes that had already been filmed earlier that year and aired between April and May. Production resumed on the remaining episodes for the second half, after a hiatus, which aired between August and October, with a few changes: measures were taken to protect against infection, including the use of a virtual audience and social distancing, all episodes aired in aired weekly, all semi-finals were pre-recorded, and the voting system was changed as a direct result. Before withdrawing the first semi-final, Simon Cowell suffered an injury following an accident in August, forcing him out for the remainder of the season and leading to him being replaced by Ashley Banjo. Comedy pianist was the winner of the season, John Courtney of the Sign Along With Us choir came in second and comedian Steve Royle came in third.
