Cuddle, sleep, feed. That’s what the first few months are about. Your child also learns a lot when you spend time together every day. Your child’s brain grows and develops as he sees, hears and touches the world around him. Around this age, faces are most interesting to your child, and your child may be able to follow your face with their eyes.

Your child will also love toys in contrasting colors such as red, black and white, as well as toys with faces or patterns such as swirls or checks. Your 1-year-old can hear you and knows your voice, but your baby may sometimes flinch when he hears you or another sound. Although eye contact is one of the ways your child tells you that he wants your attention, your child communicates with you primarily through crying. For example, your baby will cry or make hoarse sounds if he needs you.

Your baby may lift his head briefly when lying on his stomach or turn it to the side when lying on his back. This helps your child see where you are and what is around him. Sometimes your child will hold your finger, but most of the time he will hold his hands in a fist.
