The family of a 3-year-old boy who is battling leukemia don superhero costumes to give him courage when he is treated for chemo. Leone Hernandez, 3, spent much of the past year battling acute lymphocytic leukemia at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. His parents, Natalia and Dario Hernandez, say that the place scared him at first, so in order to gain courage, Leone wasn’t sure what he had, they dressed him up as Superman.

But they did not stop there: Leone’s parents also decided to dress up. From The Incredibles to Captain America, Batman to Spider-Man, the Hernandez family bought all the costumes. For every chemo visit and doctor’s appointment, the entire family, including Leone’s older brother, Emiliano, dresses up to activate their superhuman strength.

“We believe we have the superpowers we need to face this battle,” said Natalia Hernandez. “We have to make sure Leo feels it.” Oncologists say mindset matters in the fight against cancer, even for a patient who is months away from turning 4 years old. Family support also matters.
