In 1986 he was presented with the first violin, and the following year he played his first concert. By 1993 he had received a music scholarship from Truro School in Cornwall to play violin. Next year he will receive his first banjo as a Christmas present.
John Dowling competed in various folklore and bluegrass competitions from 1998 to 2002. He even taught British stand-up comedian Frank Skinner how to play the banjo on TV. John Dowling is also a member of The Dowling Thing along with his wife and violinist Anna Dowling. The eclectic group is a combination of bluegrass, jazz, folk and funk, which is a true testament to the musical experience of its members.
