When you hear that the police have been called to deal with a disturbance, your first thought is always to wonder who was killed. However, in this case, the story that unfolded at a local Bank of America branch in Montebello, California, ended up being quite heartwarming. According to a post on the law enforcement division’s official Facebook page, the Montebello Police Department discussed how they “responded to the Bank of American in Montebello regarding a patron who was causing a dis-turbance” in September 2017.
But what they thought had happened was completely different from what actually happened. “Upon the officer’s arrival, they discovered that a 92-year-old man was attempting to withdraw money from his account; however, his California identification card had expired,” the post continued. Because his identification card had expired, the bank was unable to fulfill his request. The police were called because the gentleman was upset.”
Some of you may consider calling the cops on something so insignificant as overkill- but they actually ended up alleviating the situation while providing the old man with the assistance he required. The officers made the elderly man feel safe in their presence while respecting his dignity. “Once officers arrived, Officer Robert Josett decided to take the man to the DMV in town to help him renew his identification card,” according to the post.
His identification card was renewed with the help of the DMV, and he was returned to the bank, where he was able to withdraw money from his account. He thanked Officer Josett and continued his journey.” The photo of the man and the officer walking that was later uploaded has already been shared nearly 40,000 times on the social media platform, and it is easy to see why. There were approximately 20,000 comments praising the police for not reacting to the situation in a way that would result in fatalities
and instead responding with compassion and allowing the man to return to normalcy by easing up on the process. “This officer is a Saint!” one person said. All Little Grampa wants is to maintain his independence. And the officer assisted him with dignity. Excellent work, Officer!” “Thank you Officer Robert Josett!” says another.
You solved the problem by thinking outside the box. It’s great to hear about the MPD’s outstanding work.” And finally, another comment stated, “That’s the cops we need. Not the thugs and phony police stations springing up across the country. Look it up if you don’t believe me.”
